Study for the SAT While Playing a Sport

Balance sports and SAT prep

8 min read

Time Management

The Digital SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long. To balance sports and studying, schedule SAT prep in short sessions, 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. This will allow time for practice and homework. Each week, take one full-length practice test, 2 hours 14 minutes, to simulate the actual test.

Prioritize Weak Areas

Focus on weak areas first, then move to stronger areas. For example, if a student is weak in math, spend 30 minutes a day on math problems, and 10 minutes reviewing reading and writing. Use real test questions, and track progress, aiming for a score increase of 50 points every 2 weeks.

Section Adaptive Test

The Digital SAT is section adaptive, meaning the first module decides whether the second module is easier or harder. This means a student must perform well on the first module to get an easier second module. Practice under timed conditions to simulate this. Spend 10 minutes reviewing each module after taking a practice test.

Tradeoffs

There is a tradeoff between sports practice and SAT prep. Reducing sports practice time to study more may lead to better SAT scores, but could hurt sports performance. Reducing SAT prep time to practice sports more may lead to better sports performance, but could hurt SAT scores. Decide what is most important, and allocate time accordingly. For example, allocate 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, for sports practice, and 1 hour a day, 5 days a week, for SAT prep.

Staying Motivated

Staying motivated is hard, but making a plan and tracking progress helps. Set a target score, for example 1200, and track progress towards it. Reward yourself for reaching milestones, like a 50 point score increase. This will help stay motivated and focused on the goal. Review progress every 2 weeks, and adjust the plan as needed.

Conclusion

Balancing sports and SAT prep is challenging, but with a plan, it is possible. Prioritize weak areas, practice under timed conditions, and make tradeoffs as needed. Stay motivated by tracking progress and rewarding yourself for reaching milestones. With consistent effort, a student can achieve their target score, and excel in their sport.
