Top 10 Ways to Prepare for the SAT

Prepare for the SAT with these 10 tips

Understand the Test Format

The SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long. It has four modules: Reading, Writing, and two Math modules. Each section is scored from 200 to 800. The Digital SAT is section adaptive, meaning the first module decides the difficulty of the second module. This format can affect the approach to studying.

Create a Study Plan

A study plan should be at least 12 weeks long. Students should aim to study 10 hours a week. This can be broken down into 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. The plan should include time for practice tests and reviewing mistakes. Consistency is more important than the total hours studied.

Practice with Real Tests

Official SAT practice tests are the best way to prepare. These tests are available for free on the College Board website. Students should take one test every 2 weeks. Reviewing mistakes is just as important as taking the tests. This helps to identify areas that need more practice. The tradeoff is that reviewing tests can be boring and time-consuming.

Focus on Weaknesses

Students should identify their weaknesses and focus on those areas. For example, if a student struggles with algebra, they should spend more time practicing algebra problems. The Math section has 22 questions and 35 minutes to complete them. Focusing on weaknesses can lead to higher scores. However, this means spending less time on strengths, which could also affect the overall score.

Improve Reading Speed and Comprehension

The Reading section has 27 questions and 32 minutes to complete them. Students need to improve their reading speed and comprehension to finish the section on time. This can be done by practicing with real tests and reading complex texts. The tradeoff is that improving reading speed can mean sacrificing some comprehension.

Review and Refine

Reviewing and refining are critical parts of the study plan. Students should review their mistakes and refine their strategies. This can be done by making a list of common mistakes and practicing those areas. Refining strategies can help students to avoid common pitfalls and stay focused during the test. The last 2 weeks of the study plan should be dedicated to reviewing and refining.
